Mississippi's Child Passenger Laws

Mississippi requires that all children under four years of age be in a child safety seat while traveling in private passenger vehicles, regardless of that child's position in the vehicle.

Effective July 1, 1998, Mississippi law also requires that every driver, every front seat passenger, and every child who is at least four years of age but under eight years of age to wear a properly fastened seat belt system, i.e. seatbelt, car seat, or booster seat, while traveling in private passenger vehicles.  It does not matter whether the child is in the front seat or back seat.

The fine is $25.00, plus court costs to specific jurisdictions.  The ticket may not be dismissed or remanded by showing the court that the offender has purchased a car seat or booster seat.
